125 students have enrolled forthe Certificate Course of the UGC-sponsored Gandhian Studies Centre in thisAcademic Year. The first session was held on 26th July 2011 .Thespeaker Dr. Jayshree Joshi delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Relevance ofGandhian values in daily life’.
On September 14, a session on“Musical Yoga, Kranti Geet and Laughter Therapy” was conducted by Mr SushantShinde from Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal.
On 16 September, CA Prof. HareshGodhia delivered a lecture on the topic “Lokpal Bill - An Analysis”. On 17 December 2011, School PrincipalRadheshyam Dwivedi – a renowned poet and a Gandhian recited his poem; “BapuChalisa”.
6 August 2011 was observed as‘Hiroshima Day’. A Pledge against Nuclear Weapons was taken in all classes, led by the members of the Gandhian Studies Centre. Posters from Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal depicting the mass destruction caused by thenuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as those prepared by the students, were exhibited.
The Gandhian Studies Centre,along with the NSS Unit of BSGD Junior College organized a ‘Save Poinsur River Padyatra’ and aPoster competition, on 2 October. 2011, Bapu’s Birth Anniversary. The rallybegan from Poinsur Gymkhana, with more than 120 students and 6 teachers fromthe college and terminated at Jari Mari Mandir on S.V. Road. Students carriedbanners of ‘Save the environment- Save Poinsur River from Pollution’. Dr. HemaDave- Managing Committee member of Kandivali Medical Association, Shri AmritGangar, a noted historian and Dr. Kartik Bhagat also participated in theprogramme. The padyatra was flagged off by Trivedi Kaka- a Gandhian aged 75years. He led the students in the entire padyatra.
A skit on Gandhian Values as a solution to the problems of the youth,especially ‘Drug-Addiction’ was performed on 9 Aug, during the Youth Festival. A skit depictingthe relevance of Gandhi in modern times, performed on Annual Day, 12 December2011. In the Valedictory Function of the National Seminar on 28 January 2012, aSkit was performed on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. The Gandhian Peace Examination was conducted for the college studentsby the Centre on 9 Feb 2012. 162 Students appeared: 113 in English, 23 inGujarati, 15 in Hindi and 11 in Marathi.
A Poster-Making and Slogan-Writing Competition on the topic “Say No to Nuclear Weapons” was organized on August 5, 2011. On September 3, our collegewon four prizes Essay Writing and Quiz, in the intercollegiate competitionsorganized by the Gandhian Studies Centre of Maniben Nanavati Women’s College,Vile Parle. Ms. Afroz Baig of TYBA Economics won an Encouragement Prize in the Elocution Competition organized byGandhi Smarak Nidhi and Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sanghralaya on September 26.
On November 14, the Children’sMovie Club set up, under the aegis of The UGC Sponsored Gandhian StudiesCentre, was inaugurated by Shri T.R.K. Somaiya, the Programme Coordinator,Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal. Every month, films with a social message will bescreened for the students of NL and MKES schools. The film “Bapu Ne Kaha Tha”was screened on January 21, 2012. Around 350 students from MKES English HighSchool appeared for the Gandhian Peace Exam on 27 Jan 2012, conducted by ourCentre in collaboration with Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal.
